From Stage to Sound: Inside the World of Alex Di Donna

YNTHCLOUD / ARTIST & TEAM SPOTLIGHT

Alex Di Donna: Where Musical Vision Meets Sound Design

Keyboardist. Vocalist. Sound designer. Project leader.

A musician first, a sound designer by instinct

For Alessandro “Alex” Di Donna, sound design has always started with music. Based in Taranto, Italy, Alex has spent decades working as a keyboardist, vocalist and synthesizer programmer, exploring the expressive textures of progressive rock and translating them into playable sounds for other musicians. A patch, in his view, must do more than sound convincing on its own: it needs to respond naturally to the performer and work within a complete arrangement.

The Dream Theater connection

The sonic universe of Dream Theater has been a defining influence on Alex’s programming: expressive leads, intricate keyboard combinations and signature progressive-metal textures have inspired years of careful listening, analysis and reconstruction. In 2006, his Dream Theater tribute band received recognition as an official tribute band, a memorable milestone in his musical journey.

Signature sound libraries: from Wizard Dream to Synthologia

Alex’s sound-design portfolio includes projects in the Wizard Dream and Planet Dream families, Synth Class, Ultimate Leads and Synthologia. His work across Korg instruments and synthesis environments reflects a commitment to authentic timbres, expressive controls and performance-ready combinations. The S4K and EXi projects extend that philosophy into layered, flexible sound libraries designed for demanding keyboard players.

The Pink Floyd universe: from research to the stage

Pink Floyd represents another essential part of Alex’s creative work. Projects including Endless Floyd Anthology and PF Infinity grow out of close attention to the band’s keyboards, atmospheres, transitions and live arrangements. PF Infinity emphasizes organized patches, splits and sample triggering so that complex musical passages remain practical to perform. This constant dialogue between sonic research and live experience is central to his approach.

Synthonia & SynthCloud: connecting creativity and production

As Team Leader and Project Manager for Synthonia and SynthCloud, Alex works beyond his own programming projects. He coordinates sound designers and programmers, contributes to quality review, supports product workflows and helps turn creative concepts into coherent releases. His work connects musical expectations, technical implementation, documentation and presentation—always with the end user in mind.

A stage-tested perspective

Alex continues to perform as a keyboardist and vocalist in progressive-rock and Pink Floyd-related productions. On stage, complex setups, sound changes, monitoring and synchronized arrangements create real-world challenges. In the studio, those same challenges become opportunities to design more intuitive, expressive instruments. For Alex, live performance and sound design are not separate careers: each continually informs the other.

More than presets

The guiding principle behind Alex Di Donna’s work is simple: technology should serve expression. Whether recreating a legendary keyboard texture, developing a new sound library or guiding a collaborative release, the goal is to give musicians sounds that feel alive—and allow them to focus on playing.
